INDUSTRY NEWS

Have you ever wondered how important translations are to British Colombians?

On December 3, the headlines of Vancouver Sun screamed "Mounties run afoul of Languages Act", accusing RCMP of neglecting Canadian language laws and providing press releases solely in English.

The RCMP spokesperson Tim Shields blamed their inability to provide news releases in French on timely and costly translation services (as reported by L. Culbert and A. Woo). RCMP quoted that the translation of every news release costs them at least $100 and takes 24 hours to complete. Of course it is understandable that a 24-hour delay in publishing time-sensitive information is a major setback.

However, providing 20 to 30 news releases a day, RCMP clearly does not realize other translation services, provided by local Vancouver translation agencies, that can help the authorities not only to comply with the Official languages Act, but also to translate faster and at a cost-effective rate.

If you are interested to learn how to minimize translation costs and turnaround times, please continue reading our December Issue of the Newsletter.

USEFUL TIPS
How to manage translation cost and turnaround times.

A common belief that professional translation services are expensive and that the only other solution is to use free online translation tools is a myth.

Between Google translations and expensive agency services, exist several facets of translation services that can help you achieve more accurate translations that fit your budget.

Here are 5 easy tips that will help save time and money.

  1. Get as much information as possible: By providing translation agencies with previous translations, terminology lists or other helpful resources can significantly impact the cost and most importantly the time it takes to translate new documents.
  2. Modify text for translations: Check your documents one more time to see whether or not all the text needs to be translated. Perhaps, you can modify and generalize certain parts to shorten the overall volume.
  3. Use large volumes and frequent translations to your advantage: When negotiating rates with translations agencies, it is important to paint a bigger picture instead of focusing on a 2-page translation that needs to be done in 3 hours. Translation agencies are interested in long-term, large projects. Therefore, if you have a lot of documents that need to be translated over the next couple of months, make sure that you ask for volume discounts.
  4. Arrange the most efficient order-delivery system: Make sure that you discuss with your translation provider what is the fastest and most efficient way of placing orders, delivering files and receiving translations. For example, having your documents in the electronic format, as opposed to scans and pdfs, will greatly speed up the translation process.
  5. Discuss using computer assisted translations: Even though accurate computer translations are still unattainable, technology plays a major role in human translations. Using translation tools, such as SDL Trados, will not only speed-up the process, but also will help you to maintain consistent and accurate terminology throughout the document.

These 5 tips will definitely help you shave a couple dollars off your translation budget.
